On March 24, 2016, Central Florida’s News 13 presented Dueling Dragons of Orlando Founder Andrea Eliscu with the 2015 “Public Service Hero of the Year” award for her work uniting inner-city youth and police officers through the Dueling Dragons “cops and kids” dragon boat team. The program’s mission is to use the sport of dragon boating to form long-term mentoring relationships at a critical time in the lives of low-income, at times “invisible” youth, helping to break the cycle of poverty and crime in some of Orlando’s toughest neighborhoods.
This is the third year for News 13’s “Everyday Hero” awards program. Every weekend, News 13 shines the spotlight on someone who’s making a difference in the community with their actions, their words, or their beliefs. From the 52 Everyday Heroes, six are chosen annually for special awards:
- Young Hero of the Year
- Volunteer of the Year
- Public Service Hero of the Year
- Education Hero of the Year
- The Viewer’s Choice Hero
- Overall Hero of the Year
